Intermittent Fasting

Are high ketones during fasting dangerous?

There’s a lot of confusion about the difference between nutritional ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis. Mainstream medicine often doesn’t differentiate between these types of ketosis.

Without this differentiation, you might be worried about being in ketosis. Ketoacidosis is a serious health concern and can even lead to coma and death. Ketones in the urine can be a sign of a medical emergency when it comes to ketoacidosis—not with nutritional ketosis.

There are 12 levels of ketosis. Levels 1 to 5 are where most nutritional ketosis and intermittent fasting take place. Levels 6 to 8 are where your body might be if you’re doing prolonged fasting. After level 9, your body is in ketoacidosis.

This isn’t the level of ketosis that happens on a Healthy Keto diet. Ketoacidosis primarily happens to diabetics who don’t take the right amount of insulin. In summary, ketoacidosis is very different from nutritional ketosis.

While one is hazardous to your health, the other can help improve your health and support a healthy body.
