How can I lower cholesterol on keto?

The fat cell is made up of triglycerides (which are used as fuel) and cholesterol (which can’t be used as fuel). When you break down your body fats, your cholesterol temporarily goes up.

A reason why cholesterol is high and doesn’t go low on keto (after some time of doing it properly) could be that your body is having a difficult time processing excess cholesterol due to liver damage.

Here’s what you can do to help normalize your cholesterol levels (providing you follow the Healthy Keto® diet + intermittent fasting correctly):

  • Consume plenty of vegetables (at least 7 cups per day)

  • Take purified bile salts

  • Take choline

  • Take niacin (vitamin B3)

As you adapt to the Healthy Keto diet, your cholesterol will naturally normalize on its own.

Keto helps decrease liver fat, increase liver function, and increase bile production. If you’re not already on keto, check out some Dr. Eric Berg’s keto videos on YouTube to get started.

What if you have familial hypercholesterolemia? By going on keto and cutting down on carbs, some people with this problem are able to lower their cholesterol–others do need to cut down on their fat consumption. This is something you want to talk to your doctor about.
