Is baking soda good for heartburn?

The stomach needs to be acidic to be healthy. Baking soda is very alkaline. So, when you take baking soda, you’re going to feel better temporarily, but you’re not fixing the root problem. If you use baking soda, the issue could actually get worse over time because you’re taking the acid out of the stomach and you’re not adding it back in.

What you could do for heartburn:

  • Take apple cider vinegar

  • Take betaine hydrochloride

Side effects of taking baking soda long-term:

  • Alkalizing the stomach (creating problems with protein digestion, mineral absorption and the ability to kill pathogens)

  • Depletion of your potassium reserve

  • Decreased chlorides

  • High levels of sodium
