What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals. They allow the muscles to contract and relax. They allow the nervous system to communicate. And much more. Electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, calcium, phosphate, magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, manganese, molybdenum, copper and chromium.

In terms of functioning, these are most important:

  • Sodium

    • hydrates

    • is involved in oxygen transport

    • works with potassium to generate electrical potential (the sodium-potassium pump)

    • decreased sodium can lead to weakness, tiredness and low endurance

  • Potassium

    • supports the nerve and muscle interaction

    • works with sodium to generate electrical potential (the sodium-potassium pump)

    • supports energy

    • lowers insulin resistance

  • Magnesium

    • controls the absorption of sodium and potassium

    • is associated with oxygen

    • supports the relaxation of muscles

    • helps prevent muscle cramps

    • good for workouts (especially long or intense workouts)

  • Calcium

    • supports muscle contraction

    • supports neuromuscular excitability

    • supports your bones

  • Chloride

    • helps to move fluid in and out of your cells

    • keeps the acid balanced in the body

    • How to consume them

    • You can consume them as foods, or as supplements in powder or pill form.

Where to get them
