Symptoms, conditions and causes

Why do I have a hoarse voice?

A hoarse voice can make it difficult to talk—your voice can sound raspy, airy, strained, or quiet. A lowered immune system or professional singing can stress your vocal cords, causing you to have a hoarse voice.

Cause #1: Vocal tension

You can develop a hoarse voice if you have excess stress on your vocal cords or throat. The key is to relieve the tension caused by this stress.

Cause #2: Infection

If your immune system is weak, you are susceptible to getting an infection. Some bacterial or viral infections can have the symptom of throat soreness. This can cause a hoarse voice.
