Symptoms, conditions and causes

Why does fatty liver have no symptoms?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects a large percentage of adults globally and in the US:

- Globally, 25% of adults have NAFLD, while in the US, it affects 40%.

- NAFLD can progress from simple fat accumulation to inflammation and potentially cirrhosis without early symptoms.

- It is strongly associated with obesity, diabetes (60% prevalence), and insulin resistance, even among those with normal weight (20% prevalence).

- High insulin levels, driven by carbohydrates like fructose and omega-6 fatty acids, contribute significantly to NAFLD, resembling effects seen in alcoholic fatty liver disease.
